What are you reading now?
I’m reading aloud from the book, Lowji Discovers America by Candace Fleming. The reason I picked this book to read aloud is that Lowji sees America from a different point of view from mine. I really like how he goes about making friends. Let me know what you think about the story as we continue reading it. I will respond to your thoughtful comments.
Mrs. B.
I’ve really enjoyed the book so far one, because it is really funny and two, it is suprising at alot of parts like when “Iron man” talked to his pig sweetly and not in a rude manner. I have also learned about immagration in this book. I hope lowji makes alot of new friends! and I hope those boys he met at All-mart become some of his friends also!
Hi Emma,
Thanks for writing. There are some “Laugh Out Loud” sections of the book, I agree. Ironman was a surprise for me too. I thought he would be gruff and mean. How much different would Lowji’s day have been if Ironman was mean? So far, Lowji has two friends: the pig and Ironman. I wonder who will be his next friend?
Mrs. B.
Lowji is a wierd book. I think it is in sort of a diary format as if he writes in it every day. I personally find it um….. I would say un-entertaining, it’s the typical “Boy imigrates from (——–) to (——–)”
Hi Rory,
I like the word weird, but it makes me want to know what makes it that way. Weird means strange, so could you think why the book is strange? Do you think the book is really about immigration, or maybe about making new friends and finding out about a new culture? What do you know about living in Bombay, India? Emmigrating from one country to another is exciting and scary; I think this book asks us to imagine what it would be like. Stay tuned for whether Lowji makes friends.
Mrs. B.
The book Lowji Discovers America is a very funny story! This book helped me on my project on immagration. I can’t imagine what it would be like to come to a whole new place! I like how Lowji’s dad always says “AHA!” when he finds something. I can relate to how funny dad’s can be. I bet it would be tough coming to America at first! I thought that the iron man would be mad, but he wasn’t! I was so surprised My advice to Lowji would be, keep your head up, and that things will be better! i hope he makes some friends!
Hi Marissa,
Yes, Lowji is funny. I like the way Lowji thinks through his problems. The pattern of speech that the author gives him is giving me the feeling of talking with someone from India. I think that Lowji’s new friends will surprise you and that Landlady Crisp will become more interesting as well.
Mrs. B.
This book is very exciting because I thought it was very sad to hear that the pig passout and it was funny when Lowji thought iron man was going to get very angry at him but he was just crying when he heard that his pig passout.I can’t wait for the funny and exciting new things that are going to happen to Lowji.
Hi Hannah,
What a thoughtful response you have made. I, too, was worried when the pig passed out. I thought that the three boys were going to be more trouble than they were though. Imagine seeing a great big man crying about a pet! I hope that Lowji finds some good friends and that he has some more great adventures. Lowji makes me think that life is what you make it.
Mrs. B.
I love the book! After we end the book I want to read it on my own. I cann’t wait to finsh the book! I hope to finsh it soon. I feel bad for Lowji because his haveing a hard time making friends. If I moved i would be really sad and it would hard to find the siver lining like he did.
Hi Taylor,
You are a very expressive writer. I can feel your excitement about reading and that is great. I will read as fast as I can so that you may borrow it to read for yourself. I think that making friends in a new place doesn’t just happen overnight, but you will be very pleased with all the silver linings that Lowji finds.
Mrs. B.
One book I’ve really enjoyed is Esperanza Rising. It tells about a young girl facing things she’s NEVER thought about before. She learns to care for herself and other people. Its a great book! Have you read it?
Hi Emma,
Yes, I liked Esperanza Rising too. If you liked it, perhaps you will also like a book by Esme Codell - look her up in the library materials database and let me know if it sounds interesting. I also liked Ida B. and then So B. It. as well. It sounds as though you like books where there is a strong female character. Let me know.
Mrs. B.
Lowji discovers America was not a very entertaining book because there werent very entertaining parts except for when Lowji went to Allmart and found the parrot andthe pig.
I really liked the way you explained what happened! I was also surprised about the iron man cring too! I loved how you typed everything!
GREAT REPLY!
I was suprised when Iron man got that emotional over his pig that was out in the sun. It is also pretty funny how Lowji views America and how he is learning American expresions. I also like how they compare his life in America to his lire in India
Hi Nate,
The book is really a very simple story that gives us an interesting comparision of Lowji’s new life in the USA with his old life in India. What kind of expressions do you think you would want to learn if you moved to a new country? Bummer! I would imagine you would pick the slang words and expressions because they are so expressive. I really like the character of Ironman, too. Imagine having a pig as a pet.
Thanks for writing, Mrs. B.
I agree with you that Lowji has a different point of view when it comes to making friends, Lowji is very honest and has courage. Specifically had a lot of courage when he stood up to Iron man and said, “I brought your pig in the store”. He’s also very thoughtful when he took the pig inside as Blossom (PIG) was tied up on the grill beciming ” Pork roast” . I have a lot of sympathy for Lowji considering that he hasn’t made any friends yet. I think that maybe later in the story he will have the boy whose footprints showed up in the mud as a friend. I’m very anxious to see if my prediction is right! This reply is based on the book by Candace Fleming LOWJI DISCOVERS AMERICA.
-Jackie W.
Hi Jackie W.,
I like how you wrote about Lowji’s courage. It does take courage to stand up for something that is right when you are facing someone who looks mean and gruff. I guess you can’t always tell a book by its cover, or a person by the clothes that they wear. I hope that you are right about the person whose footprints Lowji sees. I know there are other clues coming.
Thanks for writing,
Mrs. B.
Right now we are reading Lowji Descovers america is an o.k. book. I don’t like it because I don’t think it has a plot. It’s another book about a small kid immagrating to america. He doesn’t know about america because it is it’s own self. No other country has Rodeo, or NASCAR, or Football. If your from another country you have different things and cuality’s. We have pride at anything we do. The Germans didn’t used to like there leader. We are america. In India ( where lowji used to live) They had way different ways of living. It’s just too predictable.
Hi Joey,
I think that Lowji Discovers America has a plot - but maybe not as obvious, or predictable, as some other books where the big issue is “good vs. evil”. You are so right - no other country has the stuff that America has - do you think thatLowji will discover some of these things? All countries have pride in what they are good at doing. People who emmigrate to another country often miss the things they leave behind, but I think they look at their new country to see all the new and interesting things that are there. Immigration is always happening. The word America is a proper noun and should be capitalized. Thanks for writing,
Mrs. B.
I was very surprised when that really strong man got so emotional when he found out that his pig had fainted. I like it how the writer made up very close names to real names like “allmart” and “walmart” and “sports aid” and “power aid.” It is a very good book so far.
I was very surprisd when the parrot (Tippy) skrieach “POOP” thats why I perfer fish.Lowji seems very lonely with no friends thats why he needs a dog or a cat.I wonder if he will get a friend?
When I was saying that it was a typicall book I Mrs.Becksvoort was not specific so here are some books that are like Lowji: “The Imigration Story” “Letters from Rifka” etc…..
I realy love the book Loigi because it is full of adventure, mystery, and pet care. I can’t wait to see what happens next, if Lowji will ever see whose footprints thoes are.
I love it!
I realy like the book right now.But it is a little slow.I hope Iowji finds some freinds because I think he realy needs some right now.
So far I think the book lowji discovers america is exciting and surprisng. I was very surprised when the “iron man”started making a big fuss about his pig.
I think Lowji discovers America is a good and a funny book. I think it is good because all is adventchures he goes on like meeting the iorn man and following the boys handprints.I think it is funny when the big iorn mans pig has fainted, because normally a big man is all mean you would think but he is actualy careing.
I think Lowji discovers America is an ok book so far. I thought the part with the pig and Iron man was funny. I thought the part with the parrot was kind of funny too. This book is different from any other ones I have heard.

Lowji Discovers America by Candace Fleming is a good book. First, i like the part were the big tough guy that had a shirt that said iron man loves hes pig and acts all sissy. Secondly i like how it tells about how much he likes pets and he cant have one.
I thought that this book is a really good book because I like Lowji as a character.
i like the book lowji discovers america is a good book because is it very eagert u want to no what happens next
I like the book Lowji Discovers America because it doesn’t have too much humor, but it still has some. I liked how Lowji experiences new things while discovering his american apartment. I hope Lowji makes trustworthy friends while living in America. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next!
I think Lowji Discovers America is ok because I like the scene where Lowji brings the pig into the Almart.
Well, Lowji discovers America is an pretty good book so far. I like the part when Lowji is at allmart and he finds the pig and brings him inside the guy “iron man” comes to get him and starts to act really nice to him i thought that was funny.
I thought this book is a laugh out loud story because when the Iorn Man talked so bayby like to Blossem the pig he owned. Also I loved it when Tipi the parrot kept saying ”poopie poopie”. I thought that was so funny
I like the book Lowji Discovers America because it doesn’t have too much humor, but it still has some. I liked how Lowji experiences new things while discovering his american apartment. I hope Lowji makes trustworthy friends while living in America. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next! Ashley
I don’t like Lowji Discovers America because it’s not theat interesting or exiting. I think you should have chose another book. Please do not put this book on the website! Thank you.
I don’t personally find this book entertaining. The only part, so far, that I liked was the part with the pig and the guy.
Hi Mary Catherine,
It sounds to me as though you like the “action” parts of the story more than the quiet parts. I found some parts to be less engaging than others, but the overall story is full of kindness and how Lowji makes friends and who they turn out to be. It is the positive story of being an immigrant in a small town, in the middle of the USA.
Mrs. B.
I realy liked the book, though the part about when he saves the pig is weired. It is also a perfict exsample of immigration, so it will tie into a unit that I am doing. I will enjoy the next time you read to me.
The book was a little boring but the humorious parts i liked. They were intertaining like when Ironman talked sweet to a PIG but was really muscular and also the incident with the parrot . I wonder if lowji is going to have his wish come true.
Hi Alyse,
What do you mean by boring? Maybe the parts of the story that required us to make quiet pictures in our heads? I would really like to know. Several people have wanted to use the boring word, but haven’t been able to deifne it well for me. If you concentrate on the humorous parts of the book and listen for the hints the author drops, I think it might become more interesting to you. I’d like to know more about the country of India, especially Bombay.
Mrs. B.
I don’t really like this book. It is kinda of weird and it’s his parents are idiots. Lowji doesn’t really excite me and it is kinda boring.
Hi Jordan,
Since we agreed that no one would use the word boring, I am going to ask you to be more specific. It is ok not to like a book, but when asked to explain why, you need to be able to go beyond an overused word such as boring. It is also not ok to call anyone idiots. What makes you think that they are not smart? I want you to respond thoughtfully to the question. I hope that you will take some time to work and write your own thoughts.
Mrs. B.
Lowji Discovers America is a interesting book. At least to me. He sees life in a totaly different way. I mean look how acts in public. Using some words he does not even know.I wonder if he will make some more friends beside the pig and Ironman. Also if he will find the person or thing behind the hand+footprints.Emily
I dont like this book because it is weird .luigis parents yell every time they find underpants.
Hi Marshall,
I’m sorry to hear that you aren’t enjoying the book. What makes it weird? Just saying something is weird isn’t good enough, I need to read or hear an explanation. Besides his Bape finding all those things they packed, including underpants, is there something that makes you uncomfortable or that strikes you as really strange?
Please write more and be more specific next time, Mrs. B.
I think this book is verry intresting. Like one reason was I thought the pig was going to pass out and die,but he didn’t. Also I thought the Ironman was going to scalp Lowji, but he didn’t.
Anyway my best wishes to Lowji
From Sean S
Hi Sean,
Thanks for writing. What make Lowji interesting? Is it that Lowji is trying hard to figure out what it is to be living in America? Or perhaps it is the pig? What would it be like to move to another country and have to start making friends all over again? At least Lowji already spoke English, but he doesn’t sound just like the other people around him, does he? If he speaks English, why doesn’t he already know some of the slang that he learns?
Mrs. B.
I dont really like to compare books with other books because I like them all but Louji is one of the really good outloud books I have been read. I got really boared in 3 and 4 because we would always read only picture books. My definitiion of Louji is an action packed go figure book. It unravles secrets every second of the book. I always make connections and pictures in my head. Louji is a very bright boy- in India. Hes just confused and hes trying to fit in. Im just waiting to see what happens with the baseball cap boy and the brothers.Myfavorite thing about Louji id that the book gives you little secrets to the things that will happen in the next chapter to the next sentence. Thanks for reading.Natalie
Hi Natalie,
I like so many books for so many different reasons. When I listen to a book, I try to imagine so many things about the setting and the author. It is interesting to me to imagine what the author is going to dish up next. I like looking for the “foreshadowing” clues. Those are the hints that the author drops to keep the reader guessing. Lowji is confused about how to make friends in a new place. I think you will be surprised at who turns out to be his friend.
Mrs. B.
Hey Mrs Becksvoort,
The book Lowji Discovers America is an okay book. I like how it leaves you wanting more but also I don’t like how it is sort of a play by play of his life. I also like how his dad always say “AHAH” when he discovers something and with that I like how you act it out. i still am wanting to read more to find out what things he does so keep up with your great acting. I really enjoy it!
Hi Tily,
Lowji is a fun book to read aloud. I wish that I could give Lowji a bit more of a correct accent. That would make the simple sentence structure more interesting. Parents sometimes can be pretty funny and I am glad that Candace Fleming, the author made him funny.
Mrs. B.
I love this book! I read it earlyer this year. I like the part where Bape screams “Ah-ha!” It is funny too, like when Lanlady Crisp says things like ” Get off my table,” and “Scat”. I think that Lowji adjusts to his new lfe in America very nicely.
Hi Charlotte,
There are some funny parts in the story and I like the way Bape says, “AHA!” It is good to have a parent with some personality. When I read the book earlier, I thought that Bape was the grandfather. I think Landlady Crisp is interesting since she always is so busy at the beginning of the book. I think that Lowji changes how she looks at things.
Mrs. B.
I think so far it is not a very good book because the auther is trying to sound like a boy that has moved to america and she really has no experience being a boy and i dont think she moved to america from india so she does not have much experience and it does not sound that good when u dont really have a back round or experience about the story
I see what you are saying about a woman author writing about a boy. But sometimes there are men authors who write about girls. I like knowing that the author, Candace Fleming, is from India. By reading the notes from the author at the end of the story I discovered that she really knew a lot about her subject and about making friends. Were you surprised to find that Ms Fleming was really a native of India?
Mrs. B.
Lowji needs a friend but I was surprised that Land Lady Crisp got a cat and a dog.I don’t get why Land Lady Crisp says that they are tools.
I think I understand why she thinks of them as tools. She doesn’t want to become attached to them. She is lonely for Mr. Crisp and doesn’t want to have anything to do that will engage her emotions. Lowji is looking for emotional attachements - to a cat or a dog or a friend.
Mrs. B.
I like the book Lowji Discovers America becuase I think it is funny espically when Bape says “AHA.” The expressions Landlady Crisp says are funny, but especially when Lowji says “boggie!” From what we have read so far I predict the rest is going to be good.
Irjaliina,
I, too, like Bape’s, “AHA!” and Landlady Crisp is certainly softening her hard-edged comments about kids, pets, and I wonder if she will change her thoughts about dirt.
Mrs. B.
This book is okay, I like mystery better though. Its defenetly not my favorite. But my favorite part is when Luwji finds the pig and that big guy is being really nice I thought that was surprising. I think that Lowji will like having pets and living in America. I wonder who the foot prints belong to. Isn’t Ironman a triatholon?
Hi Briana,
I like mysteries too. Which ones are your favorites? Ironman is the name of the premier triathalon. He probably has a T-shirt with “Ironman” on it and Lowji doesn’t know what that is so he calls the man by the name on his shirt. I am sure that he has a real name; maybe we’ll find out later. He is an important character in the book.
Mrs. B.
I liked the book lowji discovers america because it had a lot of humor, description, and it seemed likeit was a true story. But there was another book I liked better which was called The thief Lord.I also liked the way you expressed their emotions.
-Masha k.
Hi Masha, I like the book, The Thief Lord, too. My problem is that I like so many books that I can find much to enjoy in many of them. It is fun to be able to read aloud and I am glad that you can enjoy it.
Mrs. B.
I really love the book Lowji Discovers America. When mrs.besksport stop reading I`m thinking whats going to happen next in the story.I hope we get to here what happens next!
Hi Lizzie, Lowji is a fun book to read aloud since he is so open about his new encounters. He has a fresh viewpoint and an interesting way of looking at America. When I stop reading I try to find a spot that will make you want to know what will happen next. Glad that you like it.
Mrs. B.
I like lowji discovers america because it’s fuuny and interesting. I like it when ironman comforts blossom and then the they jog by him and i think he will ask them to by him a pet
Hi Eliza,
Lowji is funny in a quiet sort of way. It is interesting to me because of the way Lowji expresses himself. I wish that I could have a proper accent to give an even better flavor of the speech patterns of someone from India. Lowji is making friends, but they are not kids. Maybe he can borrow Blossom sometime.
Mrs. B.
Hi Mrs B,
The book I am reading right now is called “Twilght”.
It is an awesome book that has a lot of pages. I am only on page 199. There are 400 pages! It is about a vampire who fallls inlove with a girl. i haven’t read it since like last week because I have been busy after school. That is okay because I know what is going on so I won’t forget anything. I love the book and I recomend it to grownups too because it is a big book.
Hi Tily,
Twilight is a very popular book! When the vampire falls in love with the human girl does the story get scary at all? I guess that the one kind of book that I don’t enjoy is one where I am really scared. I don’t care for scary movies either. So, knowing that about me, do you think that I would like Twilight? I think the author, Meyer, has written some other books in our library.
Mrs. B.
I am raedind jump shot detectives i like this book because i like raeding detectives books thy inters me and it just maks me want to take me on a invencher.
Hi Elena, Some of my favorite books are detective books since I like to figure things out. I enjoy looking for all the clues and thinking about what I am reading. Adventures that I read in books allow me to try out different life styles and different lives. That’s one reason reading can be so much fun.
Mrs. B.
I think that Landlady Crisp is starting to like Lowji and is getting nicer. The first time that I read this book, I thought that it would end up with no pets, but as we will find out soon Lowji gets many! I hope that we can read again soon!
Thanks for writing Charlotte. I am glad that you have already read Lowji and that you don’t mind re-reading it. I think that Landlady Crisp should have put Lowji to work taking care of a few things, but she wasn’t ready to ask for help.
Mrs. B.
I think that this book is okay it is not the best book in the world. But it is still funny just not laugh out loud funny. It is the strangest book I have ever heard someone read, next to ummmmmmmm well never mind.
Hi Mikey,
Maybe you will tell me what the strangest book you have ever heard is and we won’t put that out on the web. What is your favorite book?
Mrs. B.
Dear Mrs.Becksvoort,
I love this book (Lowji discovers America) but, I think land lady crisp could be a bit nicer to Lowji mabey he could help out around the apartment and she could let him have a pet. When he meets thouse boys could be a bit nicer i mean come on why cant they be nice to him and make friends and its so funny when that girl is riding by and she smles at him it is FUNNY !!!
your student
Nicola
Nicola,
I asked the same question when I read the book the first time. I thought maybe Lowji should offer to help around the apartment. It seems to me that Landlady Crisp is not ready to accept help, or she is not sure how to ask for it; she misses Mr. Crisp very much and is a little angry that he left her with the apartment and no one with whom to share dancing and listening to the Elvis. That girl on the bicycle - she is an important character!
Mrs. B.
I LOVE THIS BOOK because when bape findes forkes, spones and knives he goes “ah-ha”
Dear mrs. B,
once you started reading Lowji discovers America I thought it would be a little boring but once we got more into the story I thought it became very interesting (not to mention extremely funny) oh and by the way you are a very good reader, I hope it gets more interesting in the story!
Hi Emma,
I often find that the first few pages of a new book are not as interesting as the last book I have read. Once I get a little further into the book, then it becomes much better. I am glad you like my reading; you can tell that I am enjoying myself. I wonder if some people are uncomfortable when someone who reads aloud acts the story out. I think you’ll like the end of the story. There are some other funny parts waiting for us.
Mrs. B.
I think the three boys MIGHT become friends or become more rivals, I mostly hink that they will become friends but things wil change!
I love this book.but when all the boys in our class are saying they loved that part I was totally grossed out.So now I don’t really like it as much as I did before.
p.s. Keep doing the dynamics…I love ‘em!!
-Masha K.
Great point about the gross part! Very often some kids will like one thing about a book and another group will just roll their eyes. Differences are great to recognize and I admire both points of view. I hope that you will see that there are several sides to Lowji’s need to make friends; I guess you could say he is meeting new people and showing his ability to get along with a wide variety of people.
I thought that the part when ironman was drinking milk and spit it out his nose was really gross, I didnt like anything in that chapter.
we are reading lowji discovers america. I like it
I haven’t heard much of the book, only one chapter. So i don’t have my complete opinion. But, otherwise i like it.
Hi Austin,
I’m glad that you are finally back at school. I hope that you will enjoy Lowji discovers America. It is interesting to discover how Lowji learns about making friends and how he becomes acquainted with what it means to be an American.
Mrs. B.
I dont like this book because it’s too predictable. He always sees “iron man” and the boys.
Yes, it is a little predictable. Sometimes my predictions have been wrong, sometimes they have been correct. But who is leaving the cinnamon oat toasties?
Mrs. B.
This is just getting worse anb worse. It is so predictible. I cannot belive how easy it is to find out what happens next. The auther needs to add some more characters, to make it so that when you think a charater is coming in it’s really a new person.
Hi Rory,
So, let’s practice being positive. Since the book is predictable, I challenge you to tell me in the blog what you think will happen next. I agree that some of it is predictable, but some of it is pretty funny too. Let me know what will happen next.
Mrs. B.
So far I have liked the book because it is funny and exciting. I like all the funny parts like when Lowji gets into the burping contest with “Baseball Cap” and the other boys are impressed. I think that Land Lady Crisp will get nicer and eventully let Lowji get a pet. I think that the girl on the bike is the girl in the woods and will become friends with Lowji.
Hi Emma,
I like the way you are predicting what will/might happen next. I am sure that some of it will happen, but what about the goats? Why is Landlady Crisp getting all those animals when she doesn’t like animals and thinks of them as tools for working?
Mrs. B.
I think that Lowji is doing good in the book because he has helped Ironman and a pig so it would not die and I think it was nice when Ironman said thank you about saving his porker and I think it was funny when Lowji burped.
Hi Alex,
I’m glad that Ironman was helped by Lowji. It shows that friends can be people of all ages. Having a pig for a pet is not something that Lowji would have thought of before coming to America. Burping often makes people laugh if they are feeling a little silly. I’ve noticed that kids often burp to gross each other out. Interesting - parents don’t always like it. Hmmmm. I’m glad you are enjoying Lowji.
Mrs. B.
I think that it was very nice of the Ironman to let them go bowling for free. It would be such a small world to keep running into him. The story is starting to get funnier each time I hear more. I am curious to find out if baseball cap, and the rest of the gang will become friends with Lowji. If not then I predict he will start to play with Landlady Crisp’s so called animal tools more each day. Will Lowji ever get a pet of his own? Will he ever make some people friends? These are the questions I want answered, do you?
Hi Marissa,
Ironman was paying back a favor and it was good of him to give them a game “on the house”. The author named the town Hamlet - that really means “small town” to me, so I guess that that people can see each other often. Thinking about the boys and the pets and Landlady Crisp’s animals - I certainly wondered those same things. We’ll just have to wait to find out. That’s one of the things that authors do to make us want to read more. It works!
Mrs. B.
Yo! I think Iorn man is in the woods because he had yellow shorts.
Speak to ya later allagator!
codyo
Hi Cody,
You think it’s Ironman in the woods? Hmmm, I wonder. I think he always goes everywhere with Blossom and she makes a lot of noise. Did Ironman have yellow shorts?
See ya later, Alligator. After a while, crocodile,
Mrs. B.
The book Lowji because it is making you want to read more because it always leaves you on a ”clif hanger”.
Great comment Weston! I try to read to a “cliff hanger” situation because it makes us all want to find out more. Have you noticed that many authors do that at the end of a chapter? When that happens I want to keep reading - even if it’s late at night and I am supposed to be sleeping!
Mrs. B.
for the aqurium i think we should get the platfish because they look really cool and there about 1.5 to 2.5 inches long. Also, they bump there lips up against the glass when there hungry so we will be able to know when there hungry.
I love your comment! Are platies (spelling?) easy to take care of? Do they like to swim in schools? (ouch that’s a pun) I never knew that they bump their lips up against the glass when they are hungry - that makes me laugh to think about. Where did you find this great fact?
Mrs. B.
i think Lowji Discovers america is a good book. I think that it is funny that Lowji convinces Mrs.Crisp to get a pet to save some work. Like King to Gaurd the land from burgalurs.
Thanks for writing Nicole. Great observation - Lowji has gotten Mrs. Crisp to get a cat, a dog, and now two goats. Even though she says they are not pets, she has toys for Trapper and King. Have you noticed that Lowji describes the cobwebs and the dirt that is building up because Landlady Crisp is so busy taking care of her animals? It seems that things are not very quiet in Lowji’s apartment house. Lowji is causing things to change, isn’t he? What kinds of books do you like to read?
Mrs. B.
The book Lougi, is very interesting. It leaves me haing alot.there is alot of animals in it,and I like animals to.I cant wait to see what happens next.
Hi Alden,
I’m glad you think that Lowji is interesting. One of the reasons I picked it was that I thought it might appeal to you. I like animals too, and there are a lot of them. I have had many pets but never a pig or a goat. The author has given me plenty of places to stop and leave you all hanging in suspense. That is something a good author does. What books do you like to read?
Mrs. B.
hi! I really like this book so far.I think it was the girl in the tree because I think she likes lowgi and could be spying on him.
Hi Alex,
Smart thinking about who the mystery person is. I will need to keep reading to find out if your suspicions are true. If she is the mystery person, I predict that she will be a lot of fun and a good friend.
Mrs. B.
Well, I think the book is getting better every chapter. It maybe isn’t the best book you could have read, but it’s ok.
Thanks for your honest comment Kate. Sometimes I need to read more than a few pages in a book to decide whether I like it or not. When I read Lowji to myself I kept liking it more and more as I read. The ending made me think that you would like it too. What is the best book you have ever read?
Mrs. B.
On a scale from 1-5 (5 being the highest) I would rate Lowji Discovers America a 3 because it is exciting and suspensful. I like the part when mrs.crisp started bringing animals into the building to do the chores.
Hi Ben,
Do you think that Lowji is telling Mrs. Crisp about the animals doing the chores because he wants a pet? She does go along with his suggestions, so she must want a little help and some companions too. I think Landlady Crisp is lonely - she mentions Mr. Crisp and she sounds a little sad. Before Lowji’s family came to her apartment house things must have been very dull. Mrs. Pendergast seems a bit fussy, and the Doves are too busy being newlyweds. Not very interesting for Landlady Crisp.
Mrs. B.
I am reading lowji discovers america I think it is very intreaging beacause land lady crisp is very crisp I really think her name suits her. Right now we are stoped right in a super interesting part of the story somone is watching lowji and we don’t know who it is!
Yes! Landlady Crisp’s name is perfect for her - she is so crisp and curt with Lowji. Maybe she is starting to change a little, what do you think? I like your choice of words: intriguing - great word. Who do you think is watching?
Mrs. B.
I think that the book “Lowji Discovers America” is a,well, okay book because it shows that anyone can make friends, but sometimes it can take awhile. But the thing that kind of takes away from the book is that it is not that entertaining to me so I get bored reading it.
Hi Nick,
I hope the book gets more entertaining to you as we finish it in the next few days. After we are done with our reading perhaps you’ll tell me what you like to read about. When students tell us what they like to read, we try to buy that kind of book - lots of people like to read the same things. That’s why we have book groups and talk about what we are reading. Do you think that Lowji is just about making friends? I was thinking that it was about being lonely, finding the silver lining in what is around us, and about learning new things. What do you think?
Mrs. B.
Lowji Discovers America is geting better because Lowji is making more friends.
Yes, the book is getting better, I agree. Check out the comment I made to Nick G. - I think that we have to give books a chance to grab us and take us on their wonderful journey. Just like a new year at school, or a new teacher, we give a new book a chance to tickle us and become our friend. Thanks for writing,
Mrs. B.
In class we are reading Lowji Discovers America. We are at the part wear Lowji is meating the goats and he is wondering who is watching him.I think that it is iren man of that boy with the baseball cap. At home I am reading My Life By: Ervin “Magic” Johnson. I would recamend it to people that like basketball.
Hi Hillary,
Meeting goats for the first time might be surprising. Maybe the person who is watching is Ironman, or maybe it is “Baseball Cap”, but maybe it is someone else entirely! I’m glad you like the book about Magic Johnson. I like to recommend books - I’ll make sure we own the book so others can read it.

Right now I am reading The Cay.I lllllllllooooooooovvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeee that book.In my old school we read it as a read a loud book. And my teacher would stop at the surprise part. And the next day he would make a deal that if we payed attention he would read the surprise part,or he will just drop the book.[stop reading it]We finished the book fortunetly.I asked my mom if we could buy the book which we did.So I stayed up very late.I got to the part where the ship blows up because of the Nazis.Have you read it?! 1/31/07
Masha,
The Cay is a great book and I am glad you have your own copy to enjoy. Your teacher was a good reader. I have not read the book, but because of what you wrote, I will read The Cay very soon.

How big can guppys get?
fishkeep you copuny.
how do fish stay healthy when thay are sik?
why do you have to fluhs fihs doun the tolit?
Hi Lizzie,
I think we can find out how large guppies grow by looking at one of our websites, or by looking in one of our books. I would recommend the index of a book on fish for more information. I think that fish can keep you company too. They are very peaceful and I enjoy watching them. I do not know how to make sick fish healthy. Someone else wrote that there are fish veterinarians. I would need to do more research. When a fish dies, many people flush it down the toilet. That does not seem very dignified - perhaps others hold small funerals. It’s a personal choice.
Mrs. B.
STEP 1: determine the amount of fish you need according to the size of your tank. usually it is 2 inches of fish per gallon.
STEP 2: buy your fish from a reputable dealer who will buy back the product. If even only one of the fish looks dirty then don’t buy them. don’t buy fish from someone that has a dirty tank and make sure that the tank is clean with no dead things floating arond.
STEP 3: make sure you read about the fish first because they might have needs that you can not give them.
STEP 4: Get school fish. problems may accure.
STEP 5: resist the urge to get one of everything you like, particulary with school fish.
STEP 6: Try a britslte-nose or a clown plecostomus, or a pair of otocinclus catfish to help control the algae.
STEP 7: Raise killifish, which are excellent for a beginning aquarium, but difficult to find.
STEP 8: STAY AWAY FROM OSCARS, THEY EAT OTHER FISH THAT ARE IN THE SAME TANKS. THEY ARE MESSY TOO.
STEP 9: if you have goldfish, do not get a piranha becase they will kill them and do not try to impress people with them!!!! they are shy and unfortunate honor of eating the goldfish.
STEP 10: think about Bala sharks, wich are neat looking non real sharks. they grow over 12 inches.leave them by themselves other then with other fish.
STEP 11: avoid catfish in general. they are mean and tend to grow real big.
Hi Tily and Nicola,
I’m interested in knowing where you found this information. It looks like the format that eHow.com uses. I can tell that you have used your own words though. I have some questions about several of the steps. I think steps 8 & 9 & 11 could go together under the category of “Fish to Avoid”. In step one you say two inches of fish per gallon of water. Other sources say one inch of fish per gallon. If we are planning an aquarium, I think we need to be sure which is the correct answer. What do you think? I think you have learned a lot about having a pet. It seems that owning fish, or any other pet, means you need to do some planning. What an interesting idea.
Mrs. B.
I think that Lowji is going to let king in for some reason, then he is going to makea big mess. Also I think that land lady crisp is going to be so mad she is going to get rid of all the pets.
Great prediction Ben. It will be very interesting to see if Lowji lets King into the house. That certainly would make Landlady Crisp mad.
Mrs. B.
its getting a little better
i have no idea what will happen next
I think you mean that the Lowji story is getting better. Isn’t that great that an author can build up the excitement in a story and just make you so curious about how it ends. I think you’ll like the ending. See you on Thursday.
Mrs. B.
I like how Lowji always comes up with a pet for LandLady Crisp to slove her problems! I think Lowji is starting to make friends without even noticing. He has made friends with: LandLady Crisp, Iron man, King, Trapper, Frick, Frack, and Blossom. I hope he gets even more friends!
