  1. recently I read Dear Mrs. LaRue by Mark Teague. It was published by Scholastic in 2002.

This picture book had a lot of action and made me use my imagination to understand what was going on. When Mrs. LaRue’s dog Ike has trouble behaving she enrolls him in dog obedience school. Ike’s letters home to Mrs. LaRue paint a grim picture of life at the dog obedience school. But is Ike telling the truth? Let me know what you think.

  2. Mrs. B. I don’t really remember that book. It sounds as though I would enjoy reading it to my little sister. It would make her laugh. How long can i take the book for from our library?

Mostly to Ike, I hope you enjoyed writing this book even though most dogs can’t typewrite.

Hi Ben, you have a lively writing style. It reminds me of Ike! Especially since you added several comments later on. I wish I could reply to every comment you, and everyone else, will make. What will you do to make the story funny for your little sister? I hope you’ll point out some of the things the author/illustrator did to add meaning to the story.

You may check books out for four weeks. Let me know how she likes the story.

  3. We think that Ike is living in paridse. Hes definetly not being torcherd or somthing like that. I would love to be sent to obedience school that sounds like a lot of fun.

    !!Thanx!!

  4. Mrs.B That book was very boring I thought. My mother once read it to my brother. He loved it. Next time try reading something that catches my attention.

Hi Abbey, I’m glad you’re honest about not liking the book. I know I asked you for the kind of books you do like to read and you told me that you don’t like typing or using the computer. You have a lot of good ideas and I like hearing them. Let’s try to find another book that you will enjoy and that you could read aloud to your brother.

  5. The dog was just making a story for the news. The dog wasn’t telling the truth. He was making a story for fun. I don’t think any of the ideas he made up were real. I did like the story a little.

Van, thanks for writing a comment. I liked the way you refreshed your memory about the book. You re-read the book and your comments show me that you really thought about what the author did when he told us the story.

  6. Mrs. B-
I remember this book like a charm, and I sure loved it!!! Ike was so mean by making up all of his letters to Mrs. LaRue, but I guess he wanted to make them up because he wanted to stick with his thought about going home because of hating the ‘dog’s horrible obedience school’, at least more than staying at the ‘dogs house of paradise’.
Do you think that my older brothers would like this book?

Hi Maggie, I think your older brothers would laugh to see the antics that Ike invented.

The author might have been making a comment about the way students often talk about school. I hear kids say they hate school, but sometimes they really seem to be having a good time - I suppose it’s just that we all like to have something to complain about.  Ike really had a good life with Mrs. LaRue and the obedience school was pretty cushy too. Ike’s imagination is well-formed. Did you like the illustrations?

  7. Mrs.B-
I remember this book very well and thoroughly enjoyed it. Ike was obviously making all his letters up. I could understand that he would miss his owner Mrs.LaRue and would want to come home but it would seem as though a dog like Ike would think it was paradise there. If I were a dog I would love it there, I would until I felt home sick. Please keep reading books that are just as fun and imaginative.

Hi Meredith, I’m glad you liked the book. The author gave Ike a great imagination. Maybe Ike was homesick and that’s why he pretended to be treated so badly. Hmmm, what do you think the author was trying to get us to see?

I like humer books they make my mind spark with exitment and laughter! They are always adding in little comments or jokes hidden in the texts! :-) So try… LEON AND THE SPITTING IMAGE! It rocks!!!!!:-) !! Thanx !!

Hi Megan M., I feel the same way about Leon and the Spitting Image. Maybe we should encourage others in our class to read it too.  What could you tell us about the book to make it appealing to your classmates? Do you think it would be helpful to tell people what genre novel it is? Here’s a “writing tip” put the title of a book in italics; I’ll know it’s a title and you won’t have to capitalize every word.

    Thank you, Mrs. B.

  9. We injoyed reading the book.We think that picture books like that can be fun for people of all ages. We are also wondering why Ike made the school sound like an aweful place, his owner would probably be more likely to want him back if it sounded like he was having fun, maybe Ike wanted to stay at the school. We don’t think Ike was telling the truth.

Hi Lauren and Jessica, I’m glad you both enjoyed reading and hearing the book.  When I first learned to read I thought picture books were for little kids. Now, I agree with you and agree that picture books like Dear Mrs. LaRue can be fun for all ages.  Do you think that Ike made the school sound awful because he wanted to go home or maybe because he didn’t want Mrs. LaRue to know how much fun he was having? I don’t think Ike was telling the whole truth either. The artwork added to my understanding of the story by giving me ideas about what was really going on.

    Thanks for writing,

    Mrs. B

  12. i enjoy picture book i love to look at them and study them. i also like to think of pictures in my head but not as much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Jillian, I’m glad to know that you like picture books and that you enjoy studying them. Having the pictures does help tell the story. One of the wonderful things about a really good picture book is how the pictures and story go together. Some books do a better job than others. That is something that librarians like to look for.  Perhaps you can look for some picture books that do a really good job of “meshing” pictures and writing.  Do you have a favorite? Here’s a writing tip: always begin a sentence with a capital letter, and the word I is always capitalized. It makes your writing so much more interesting.

Hi Lauren, Maggie, and Maya, thanks for writing to the blog. Maggie, how nice that you would like to read this story, Dear Mrs. LaRue, to your baby cousins in Toronto, Canada.

I would enjoy reading what made the book enjoyable for you. Was it funny? Did it make you imagine Mrs. LaRue being miserable without Ike? Was Ike a tricky dog? When you write another blog article, I hope you will each write something about other books which you have read.

  14. Mrs. B.-
my favorite types of books are probably about animals. I will spend all of my free time reading about wild animals, or hanging around pets. I will play with my brothers leopard gecko anytime he is gone and my mom gives me permission, because it seems like he doesnt take care of it. my other brother has a lot of fish that i love to watch, and i sometimes help him clean out the tank. I used to have two hermit crabs, a hamster, a guinea pig, i hang around the horse barn that i ride at, and i will play with them for hours. (usually i will clean them and give them tons of treats.) do you think that there is anything else i can know about having pets, or about wild animals?

Hi again Maggie, I think your whole family likes animals. I’m not familiar with leopard geckos. How big does it grow? My daughter had the following pets: voles, hamsters, mice, rabbit, guinea pigs, hedgehog, fish, hermit crabs, salamanders, and now she has a cat. We also have a dog, but we have never had a horse. My favorite stories when I was in 3rd grade were by Marguerite Henry, Misty of Chincoteague and Sea Star. Have you looked in the 636 section of the library to see what we have there?

  15. Mrs. B. I remember reading this book at the beginning of the year. I think this book would be perfect for my cousin that lives in washington dc.
i think ike was being a bad dog when he ate the chicken pie. if i was mrs. larue i would send him to obiedience school just like she did.

Hi Elias, I am glad that you remember reading the book at the beginning of the year.  How old is your cousin in Washington, DC? It’s fun to look for books that someone else will enjoy. Librarians get to do that a lot.

Ike was being bad, naughty is another word for it, and he shouldn’t have eaten Mrs. LaRue’s chicken pie. Maybe he was naughty so often that Mrs. L. couldn’t take it any more. Parents sometimes get tired of their kids’ antics; was Mrs. LaRue like a tired parent?
    Thanks for writing, Mrs. B

  16. Next time Miss.LaRu should look were Ike is going because next time he might go to dictator school and rule the world. which is bad very bad awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow Brad, I could tell how you thought by the large number of !!!!!! you wrote. What made you think that Ike would go to dictator school and end up ruling the world? What a wild idea! If you wrote a story, would you have a dog who ruled the world? I wonder if anyone has ever written about a dog ruling the world? How could I find out?

    Thanks for writing, Mrs. B.

  17. I’m really pleased that so many of you wrote to let me know about your thoughts on the book. I’d like to read another book that would make you laugh. Leon and the Spitting Image might make you laugh, but it is a long book. Do you think we could listen for 15 minutes every day?

  18. This summer i read Winter MOrning it was a sad :-( story about her family trying to survive winter. I reccomend it to all it was sooo good so…. READ IT!!! :-):-) :-)

    Hi Megan,

I am so glad you found a book that you enjoyed. Can you describe what was sad about trying to survive winter? Sometimes I don’t like winter when it is all gray and dark, but other times it is so beautiful that I become happy.

  19. :-) i read BECAUSE OF WIN DIXIE I WAS OK BUT IT IS NOT A GOOD READ ALOUD BOOK BUTONE TO READ BY YOUR SELF:-) :-0

    Hi Jillian,

Why is Because of Winn Dixie not a good read aloud book? Would you rather read it alone because it makes you sad or happy?

Here is a good idea: try to use both capital letters and lower case letters when you write. All capitals can be misunderstood as shouting and I know you wouldn’t be shouting.

    Thanks for writing, Mrs. B

  20. I recently read the Book called The True Confesions of charlotte doyle it was the best book that i have ever read. it was about this girl who got on this boat and dedicated herself to the crew members and her best friend one of the crew members named Zacheria ends up “DYING” supposedly:-( it was a very sad part in the book then Charlotte ends up accused of murder!8-)
this book is a must READ!!8-):-)!!!!!!!! i also just read Misty of Chincoteague it was fantastic very descriptive!!

i also recenttly read A Week In Woods by Andrew Clements i thought that it was an okay book it was about how these kids went on a trip and the kid got mad at the teacher and ran away then the teacher had to go and find them and the tacher ends up getting hurt and the kid doesn’t even know where the teacher is!!!!!!!!!
if you like Andrew Clements then you should read this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi Lauren C.,

I really liked The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle too. It was amazing that Charlotte could be on board the ship without a chaperone. I think she wouldn’t have had any adventures if her chaperone had been on board with her. I forgot that the author Avi had Zachery “die”, thanks for reminding me. What I really remember well is that Charlotte’s parents were very angry with her for her behavior and that she….. uh oh, I don’t want to give away the ending. I wonder whether anyone else in our classes has read and liked this book. Maybe they will want to write and let us know.

Here’s a grammar tip: alway begin the first word in a sentence with a capital letter. It makes your work easier to read and understand. You have great enthusiasm and good grammar will make your happiness shine without the exclamation points!

Misty of Chincoteague was one of my favorite books in fifth grade too! I am glad you told us about it. Why was it so special?

  21. I read the book The Night of the Homework Zombies by Scott Nickel. He has a good imagination to tell a funny and interesting story. :)

    Hi Van,

I didn’t like homework when I was in fifth grade. Do you think the homework zombies could have helped me with my homework. Or would they have eaten it?  That would be a terrible excuse. I think that teachers can figure out when we are making up a story about stuff like homework, what do you think?

  22. recently i read a book called Allies of the night. it is book 8 of a 12 book series. the author’s name is darren shan. the sieries name is Cirque Du Freak and i have been reading them since half way through the summer. i like these books and would recomend them to the class.

    Hi Elias,

Those Cirque Du Freak books are really exciting; do you think they are a bit scary too? Some of us might not like scary books (me) and that is why I asked about that. It is important to me that I am entertained, but not scared. Mysteries don’t scare me though and I like reading Dick Francis mysteries. His writing is very descriptive and mostly for adults as well as very long. It’s good writing because it makes me really “see” the story. If you like a little humor, you might also like, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.  My daughter read it in sixth grade and it is funny and strange. What will you read next?
    Thanks for writing,

  23. I also read… Sorrow Of the Morning:’-( it was a super sad story by??? i dont now but find it and read it. It;s about a family of black people trying to survive as they get pushed around by whites. Then Abraham Lincoln helped them and gave the family peace. He invited them to a ball thing yet he was then exacuted it was sad yet very interesting. So give it a try

I’d like to find Sorrow of the Morning. I could look for it in our online database.  We sometimes call it the card catalog, but there aren’t any cards and so that sounds strange.  I could look the book up in the MINERVA database to see which libraries oen it.  Then I could discover who the author is.

    Thanks for writing,

  24. right now i am reading Harry potter so far it is cool it is interesting book because they do alot of magic so its cool i am up to hollowen it is one of the best books i have every read i just thak you because i lost my copie so if it wasn’t for you i would not be reading this book

Great! Brad, you have made a super discovery - that when you need a book the library is always glad to lend you a copy.  Do you remember that you may even borrow a book from the public library in someplace besides Falmouth? What will you want to read after you finish reading Harry Potter? I remember I started right in after I finished each book and re-read the entire book. I also like the Series of Unfortunate Events books by Lemony Snicket. They are short and very funny. The newest, and last, title just came out this past weekend. I was away and have not been able to buy a copy yet. I’m working on it though!

  25. i am doing something for libary and i will tell you and my class about Matilda it was a great book about a realy mischief little girl.I recomend this book to anyone who likes comidey and crazynis it was so COOL!

Hi Maggie, Matilda was one book that made me wonder what kind of nutty parents did that girl have? I think that Roald Dahl, the author, wanted us to see that kids can survive even if they don’t share the same ideas as their parents or relatives. Matilda’s parents didn’t even like to read, but Matilda loved to read. Reading surely did help her out a lot. Can you think of a time when it was really lucky that Matilda could read well?

Grammar tip: leave a space or two between the end of a sentence, after the dot, and the first word of the next sentence. It makes reading so much easier.

I like comedy and humor a lot. I am so glad that you do too.

    Thanks for writing,

  26. Mrs.B -
I have just recently finished reading the book Totally Joe by James Howe, published by Ginee seo books . It was a great book consisting of about 200 pages. It is in a diary form writing and it is about a young 13 year old boy, Joe. Joe is different from every one else and he relies on friendship and his family. :-) Anyone could relate to Joe and his school year problems.

    Hi Meredith,

I have been looking at the book Totally Joe for several days. I think I like the cover picture of the green Converse sneakers; the cover makes me want to read the book.  I like books in diary format. The diary makes the story comfortable to follow and time moves forward in a fairly logical way. When I was thirteen I, too, was different from many of my peers and I remember having some school year problems. Totally Joe sounds to me as though I would like it for its honest look at growing up.  What will you choose to read next?

    Thanks for writing,

  27. Danny the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl I loved this book, I think Danny is brilant because he made the ultimant phaesnt catching trick. I thought it was funny when Danny drove his fathers clients car to save his father.

Its true, Danny the Champion of the World is a great book! Roald Dahl was a writer who made words and ideas come alive for many readers. Did you know that at one time he lived in a gypsy caravan? If you read his autobiography, Boy, you will discover where he found many of his unusual ideas. His childhood was very different from yours.

Let me know what you will be reading next.

  28. My class recently finished reading The Wanderer, by Sharon Creech. It was a book about a 13 year old girl named Sophie and her cousin, Cody on a boat with their aunts and uncles sailing to their Granfather in England. The book is written like you are reading Sopie and codys logs that they are both keeping. It was my favorite book because it kept you guessing and wondering the hole wa through. It is cool to hear Cody and Sophies thoughts about different thoughts about the same experiences. The whole book Cody s trying to find out what happened to Sophie’s parents Sophie was adopted when she was little) but all anyine ill say is it was very bad!

Jessica, you make me want to read this book. I need a good book to read and I think I’ll choose this one. The author used logs written by the two children as an engaging way to tell the story. I wonder if you can imagine trying to tell the story any other way?  Sometimes authors use “devices” such as diaries and logs to help us “hear” the voice of the person telling the story. Can you think of any other books you have read where the author used such a device?

    Thanks for writing,

    Mrs. B.

    Hi Jake,

I’m glad I finally made it to your comment. The Wind in the Willows is a lovely, funny, and sometimes sad, book. I am so happy to hear that you did well on your book report.  I can tell that you liked the adventures of Toad. Wasn’t he naughty? Who were his friends? Were they his friends even though he was always finding himself in trouble?

What will you choose to read next?

Maggie, I’m glad you loved this book. We all have fears to conquer and prejudice is horrible to see. Do we have this book in our library? If not, is it one you think other students would read and enjoy?

  31. Mrs.B- I reccently read a book called Defiance Written by Valerie Hobbs.New York Farrar Straus Giroux, 2005.was who published it. It was about a boy on vacation during the summer away from the hospital. He has an illness, cancer. His name is Tobias[Toby for short] Toby meets an elderly woman named Pearl Rhodes Richardson. Who in the story is a poet and loves poetry. Pearl has a cow,Blossom. In the end something tragic happened pretty darn close to the end. Mrs.B I highly suggest you read this book. I want to know if this library contains any other books by Valerie Hobbs. Please Respond. I also want you to read this EXCELLENT book. I’ve also read a lot of other books to.

    -AbbeyM.

    Hi Abbey,

I will be glad to respond. Sometimes it takes me a little longer to write since I am trying to write to everyone. I am thrilled that you liked Defiance by Valerie Hobbs. First, I am happy because it is a Maine Student Book Award (MSBA) choice for this year and I’m glad to see those books fly off the shelves. Second, I am pleased because you write so well about the excitement that you felt when you read Defiance. I really can feel your enthusiasm and your “voice” when you write.

I found that Valerie Hobbs wrote several other books: Caroline Crow Girl, Charlie’s Run, Sheep, Sonny’s War and several others. I used the MINERVA database to uncover this info. Now, I can also use the same database to find out whether Falmouth Memorial has any titles. They do have some of them: Defiance, Sheep, Sonny’s War, and Tender. You may call and reserve one today.

    thanks for your comment,

  32. Heroes like Spider-man, Superman, Fantastic Four and Bat-man have very good comic books. I like them because they have action, adventure and super powers that are unbelievable! ;)

What kind of book of adventure do you like, Mrs. B?

I’m so glad you asked what kind of adventure books I like. I liked the book, Banner in the Sky by Ullman, when I was in fifth or sixth grade. I think I read it about six times. Later I read Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George (what a long name). This was an exciting story about a girl in Alaska who runs away from having to marry someone she doesn’t like. The amazing adventure part was when she lived for a while with wolves in Alaska. That part made me think anyone, boy or girl, could enjoy the story. Another book of adventure that I read and liked was My Side of the Mountain, also by Jean Craighead George. In comic books I always like Spiderman the best. What will you read next?

  34. I just finished a book called Holiday Memories by Lauren Brooke! This book is about a girl who helps horses that were abused or frightend gain trust back. It was a good book and I liked it alot. The only thing is that some of it I did not get because it was some horse word or meaning. I would recomend this book to people that are in to animals or more importantly horses. I know that they would get it more than I did. I would not recomend this book to someone seven or younger because they would probably lose interest after the first sixty or seventy pages. Well not every one but when I was seven I would most likley.Hope you all try this out!!!

Thanks Laura B. for writing so clearly about the audience for Holiday Memories. I think that the plot sounds very interesting. Do you like horses a lot? I used to love horses when I was in fifth grade. I wanted to learn to ride a horse very much.  Horses are such large and lovely animals. Have you found the horse books in the library? What Dewey number do you think they will be in?

I read a book called “CHASING VERMEER” it was a detailed mystery story. It was very interesting I love how she (the auther) made the story come to life in my mind. The charicters were tring to find the answer to the mystery and it was…??? Read this increadible story and you will find out!

    Hi Megan,

I read Chasing Vermeer too! I thought it was fantastic.  The author is Blue Balliet and I think she is a female; someone that Mrs. Walsh knows went to school with either her or her brother. Maybe you could ask Mrs. Walsh.  I would like to know, maybe you could ask Mrs. W. and let me know what you find out. Being an information sleuth is fun.

  39. Dear Mrs. B-
I just read a book called The Tales Of Fourth Grade Nothing. It was really funny! In one part, a little boy, Fudge, ate a flower. In another part of the book, Fudge pretended to fly off of the playground, so he lost his front two teeth. How silly of him! (Just so you know, he is only four years old) the best part is at the end, so you should really read this book.

  44. I am reading the book THE GREAT GOOD THINGS. I have not started to read it yet but Miss Hall-Riddle said that she loved it. I think that is a good thing. The book is about a twelve year old girl who is reading a book that comes real and whatever she reads comes true and she my never look at the person that is reading the story. It really interacts with the reader and I like that. The good thing about that interaction is you never get bored as long as you are reading it. Once I started I could not let it go of it. I thought it was amazing

  49. I have recently read the book 40 greatest April fools jokes.I remember one of the jokes, There were these kids huddling in a circle yelling:FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! Then the recess aids all came over to see what was going on while two 7th graders were in the middle having a thumb war. I thought that was pretty funny, but I don’t think I’m going to try it

  52. hi Maggie,
i liked Flush too i thought that it was a great book too I loved how he put so much suspence into the book you could tell that he really took his time righting the book. I also liked how the little girl got involved and I liked the part where they figured the whole thing out when the boy was sitting in the boat. I also like part when the dad is in jail and he sunk the book I think that it added mysteryness.

  55. Very Important Notice!

Notice to all grade 5 LS classes. Bring your Falmouth Memorial Library card to your next class - Red and Green Sections bring your cards on Monday October 23, Blue and Yellow sections bring your cards on Friday.

    Mrs. B.

I have had a number of replies to my post; good for you for keeping up to date with class. In answer to one question: I think you should bring your own card. If you don’t have one you may bring your mom or dad’s card.  Maybe now is a great time to make sure you have your own library card.  We will be using them to borrow books and to experience the excitement of choosing a book by using our database, NoveList, and MINERVA. I’m really pleased to see you learn this.

  57. Right now i am reading the Last Battle, which is the last Narnia book.
it is good, but, unfortunatly, all the kids die in a train accident.

    Hi C.G.

I really like all the Narnia stories, even the Last Battle. I guess because Aslan is there to help the kids in the train accident. Do they all die? I can’t remember. I read the series when I was your age and then again when I was in my twenties and I liked the books even more. Isn’t it a glorious thing to know that you can keep on enjoying a favorite book?

    Thanks for writing,

    Mrs. B.

    Nicola L

Hi Nicola, I am glad that you like Lowji. I think the author did a wonderful job in creating such a believable character. As Lowji would say, “Believe it!” I also like the Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It is one of my favorite books from childhood. I even liked it when I reread it as an adult. I hope you will read it on your own very soon. Remember to reread some of your favorites when you are older and let me know what you think then. Maybe we’ll still be blogging about books! It is fun to recommend (sp) books to people by blogging.
